Syntiant’s Dave Garrett Receives UVA's 2021 School of Engineering Achievement Award
Irvine, Calif., November 1, 2021 – Syntiant Corp., a provider of deep learning solutions making edge AI a reality for always-on applications, today announced that its vice president of hardware, Dave Garrett, was awarded the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Engineering and Applied Science’s 2021 School of Engineering Achievement Award.
Honored for his engineering achievements and impactful research in low-power chip design, Garrett, also an IEEE Fellow, received his award at this year’s Thornton Society Dinner held in Charlottesville, Va.
“I can’t be prouder of Dave, and the University of Virginia could not have picked a more deserving graduate,” said Kurt Busch, CEO of Syntiant. “He is our first employee and continues to be an instrumental force for Syntiant as we execute on our global mission of advancing ultra-low-power edge AI computing.”
“My whole career has been solving puzzles, inventing things, building new systems,” said Garrett in a recent UVA alumni profile published here. “I can’t imagine doing anything else. That’s what I love about working at Syntiant. We get to design and implement new deep learning architectures in edge computing that has disrupted traditional MCUs and set new standards in low-power, always-on inference at the edge. I am so honored to receive this award and have many mentors to thank.”
Garrett earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering as well as his Ph.D. at UVA. He also received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Vermont. Prior to Syntiant, he held the role of associate technical director at Broadcom and is recognized as a distinguished engineer within the company. A holder of more than 100 U.S. patents, Garrett also was responsible for the development of 50 different chip products at Broadcom, and for the transmit beamforming architectures that shipped in more than a billion devices.
